Parasite - Blu-ray Review

One of my absolute favorite movies of 2019 is finally available to buy. I truly couldn't be happier. Parasite is one of those films that gets under your skin, hence its perfect title. It's one that I couldn't stop thinking about. Not only is Bong Joon Ho's direction impeccable, but the writing and acting were both layered, immersive, and unforgettable. This film centers on the Park family, the kind of wealthy individuals that many aspire to be, and the Kim family, a group of charismatic characters that are street smart and savvy, but live on very little money. One day, these two families are brought together through quirky events, but the Kim family senses an opportunity. They slowly begin making their way into the Park family's lives, but not everything is as cheery and carefree as they'd hope.

Parasite made its grand debut at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and went on to win the Palme d'Or, which is the highest prize that can be awarded at the festival. Since then, it's taken the cinematic world by storm. For months, almost everywhere you went, people were talking about Parasite, and for very good reason. Since then, it continues to garner a number of accolades. Most recently, the film was nominated for three Golden Globes including Best Director and Best Screenplay and ultimately won Best Foreign Language Film, making it the first-ever Korean film to win the award. Not only that, but the film has received a grand total of 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, and Best Film Editing.

Clearly, this movie is a must-see, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. To make things even better, the Blu-ray DVD offers up more for fans of the film to take in along with their viewing. Along with the film, which showcases Kyung-pyo Hong's stunning cinematography in HD, it also includes a Q&A with director Bong Joon Ho, which is incredibly insightful and worthy of checking out if you admire his work. The Blu-ray also includes a digital code, so you can download this film and watch it wherever you like.

Trust me when I say that this is a movie worth seeing. Not only before awards season, but just in general. It's a powerful social commentary that's equal parts thriller, comedy, and drama. Every viewing unpacks something new and exciting, and I can't wait to see what Bong Joon Ho has in store next.

Parasite is now available on Blu-ray & DVD.
