Kinky sex and Stephen King… who would’ve put that together?
Needless to say it ends up being a TERRIFYING combination in this movie.
This film can be streamed on Netflix. It's about a man named Gerald, played by Bruce Greenwood, and his wife Jessie, played by Carla Gugino, who try to rekindle their marriage when they go on vacation to their lake house… in the middle of nowhere. JUST SAYING. While in the middle of a wild hand-cuff-filled sex game, Gerald dies and Jessie is left handcuffed to the bed.
I bet you’re wondering where the story goes from here, right? Well, the rest of the movie is about how she tries to escape while attempting to avoid panic and crazy hallucinations. It gets CRAZY.
For a very small suspense thriller, this movie packs a WHOLE lot of punch. Carla Gugino is phenomenal. She really keeps the audience intrigued and gives a fantastic performance with very little space and objects to work with. She gives her all in this performance and everything from her facial expressions to the way she speaks truly shows how terrified she is, and as a viewer it really works well at scaring you too. The sound design and cinematography really help to capture the tone of the film also. Everything comes together perfectly into an incredibly well-made condensed thriller.
This movie is directed by Mike Flanagan, who also did a movie called “Hush”, which you can find on Netflix as well. He’s AMAZING at making small-scale thrillers that truly keep you on the edge of your seat. They have simple plots, but really keep you invested the entire time. Make sure and check “Hush” off your list after you see “Gerald’s Game”.
This is a fantastic psychological thriller and perfect to watch during this Halloween season. I’d say the best Stephen King adaptation of this year, and that’s saying A LOT from someone who saw “It” three times.
